Regional Museum in Jílové u Prahy

Masarykovo náměstí 16, 254 01 Jílové u Prahy

The museum is housed in a historic building called "Coin" in the lower part of the Jihlava square. The Gothic house served as a mining office until 1420, where the royal minster collected taxes in gold from miners and also bought gold for the needs of the monarch.

From there the mining business in the vicinity of Jílý was managed. The Regional Museum in Jílové u Prahy is devoted to local history work for the Prague-West district (lower Posázaví, central Povltaví) and is also a specialized museum for gold mining in the Czech Republic.

Permanent exhibitions

History of gold mining and processing

Gold has accompanied mankind since the beginning when it learned to use metals. Gold has an exceptional position due to its ease of processing, its rarity and its beauty. Not least because of its unique properties such as its chemical stability (it does not corrode), malleability and, in the last 100 years, its very good electrical conductivity. The Jílové Museum is systematically and comprehensively devoted to the importance of gold in our country, in the world and in many sectors of human activity.

The exhibition Ora et labora

The archaeological exhibition Ora et labora (Pray and work) is located in the basement of the museum, which is dedicated to the Benedictine monastery of St. John the Baptist on Ostrov u Davle founded in 999, the oldest history of Jílovsko and the extinct medieval settlement at Hradištěk u Davle. Visitors can see a 3D visualisation of the possible appearance of the monastery in its various stages of development. Furthermore, the 3D projection shows the medieval appearance of the extinct town above the confluence of the Vltava and Sázava rivers in a place now called Sekanka, which is traditionally associated with the Ostrov Monastery. In the exhibition, visitors will also see a reconstruction of the monastery scriptorium, the interior of a medieval country house or a model of the settlement at Sekanka in the 13th century. The exhibition also includes a new nature trail from Sekanka to Ostrov and to the church of St. Kilian in Davle, which was historically part of the wider monastery complex. There are 10 information panels that will acquaint visitors with the history, form and results of archaeological investigations at individual sites. Each panel includes a large-scale image with a visualisation that shows the visitor what the site looked like centuries ago.

Tramping and the nature of Lower Posázaví

The exhibition is dedicated to the landscape between the Kocáb, Vltava and Sázava rivers and the history of the tramping movement. It was in the southern surroundings of Prague that tramping originated around 1918.

Adit of St. Anthony of Padua

Work on the St. Anthony of Padua adit was carried out in 1753 and 1754. Contemporary reports state that "they found an old work 22 láter (about 40 metres) deep, and as no promising vein was immediately seen, they abandoned the work." The adit was then inaccessible for more than 250 years.

Haliř adit

Mining of the local adit from the valley of the Turyňský brook took place in 1949-1950 as part of the exploration of the entire Jílové gold-bearing district. At the same time, an old adit mined eastwards from the valley of the Chotouňský brook was opened in the western part of Halíř. The mining of the old adit did not yield any interesting results. The new Haliri adit, which opened up the entire vein zone with its length of about 270 m, undercut extensive surface remains, possibly of medieval workings.
